The porch of Lakeside Cottage with Lake Virginia in the distance to the left. A memorandum dated May 12, 1964 explains the rivalry between the twin cottages, Lakeside and Pinehurst: "Alumnus Alfred Frank Sloatermen. At my request Mr. Sloaterman brought to the Reunion from California last April the attached pillow case which origionally belonged in Pinehurst [and can now be found at the Rollins College Archives in the Olin Library]. This is the story he told me about it -- "There was rivalry between Lakeside and Pinehurst Dormitories. Lakeside put up a yellow flag on the flag pole [which stood between the two dormitories] then greased the pole, Pinehurst took it down. That was a real brawl. The next day a pillow case with a fine letter P was much higher up and more grease [was put on the pole to keep the Lakeside students from removing the pillowcase]. 'You can have a week to take it down, Lakeside.' [was the message from Pinehurst.] As a last resort they [Lakeside] tried shooting it down. No luck. So we took it down."
