Mr. J.H. Abbott was the originator of the idea of a railroad to connect the growing towns of Winter Park and Orlando back in 1886. The Winter Park Land Company granted the right of way into Winter Park in 1887. Many delays faced the investors before the gala opening on Wednesday, February 13, 1889. Two thousand tickets were sold and three hundred trips were made that day with "no delays, no accidents to mar the perfect pleasure of all." Around the turn of the century the railroad was sold to Seaboard Air Line.
